Houston’s new $70-million Wortham Theater Center opened Saturday night with an invitation-only black-tie gala. With actor Tony Randall as master of ceremonies, more than 2,000 people watched performances by the Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera, Tommy Tune, Diahann Carroll and the Tango Argentina dancers. Emmy Award-winning producer George Stevens Jr. staged the performance. The center, sread across two downtown blocks, is the first opera house built in the United States since the Kennedy Center in 1971.
