The World : Argentina OKs Divorce
The Argentine Senate approved a bill legalizing divorce, removing the final obstacle to the measure becoming law after more than a year of heated national debate. The 26-14 vote came at the close of a marathon session on the controversial bill, which has been vehemently opposed by the nation’s influential Roman Catholic Church. The Senate must vote again, article by article, on the legislation this week, but that is considered a formality unlikely to alter the bill’s content. It must then be signed into law by President Raul Alfonsin.
