Gary Hanning has been named co-coach of Chapman College’s softball team. Hanning, 30, will coach the Panthers with Lisle Lloyd, who led this year’s team to a 13-28-1 record in his fifth season. Hanning has coached the Orange County Bat Busters since 1983, leading the team to second-place finishes in the American Softball Assn. Senior Nationals (players ages 16-18) the past two seasons. He also has coached at Ontario Christian High School (1978-79) and been an assistant at La Quinta High School (1985) and Saddleback College (1986).
Brooke Schakel, a 5-foot 7-inch setter at Ramona High School, has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at Chapman College. Schakel led Ramona to a tie for the Avocado League title and into the second round of the San Diego Section playoffs. She was chosen Avocado League player of the year and named to the All-San Diego team.
