Chandler Sets a Track Record for Motorcycles

SAN JOSE — Doug Chandler of Salinas, Calif., won only by inches in the $75,000 Honda-San Jose mile motorcycle race Sunday.
Chandler covered the 25-lap, 25-mile main event in 15 minutes, 30.796 seconds at an average speed of 96.690 m.p.h. to set a track record.
The old record, set by Jimmy Filice of Modesto, Calif., was 15:25.030 at 96.254 m.p.h.
Finishing behind Chandler was Bubba Shobert of Carmel Valley, Calif. Ricky Graham of Salinas, Calif., finished third.
A crowd of 18,000 watched the event at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds.
