Duarte : Mayoral Selection Delayed

An attempt by Councilman Mervin Money to get the City Council to name him mayor this month failed when the council decided to delay reorganization until after the council election in November. Because of the delay, Mayor John Van Doren will remain in office until at least November.

Money, who is mayor pro tem, has served on the council since 1980 and was passed over for the job last April, when Van Doren was appointed.

The council last month voted to change the date of the election from April, 1988, to November, 1987, when it will coincide with the school board election. Despite the new election date, Money wanted the council to reorganize this month and hoped that he would be named mayor.

Van Doren, who has not said whether he will seek a second term as mayor, said last month that he would not support Money as mayor. Although there is no rule that the mayor pro tem automatically gets the job, there is a state law that requires reorganization on the first Tuesday after a council election.
