Gordana Swanson, who has served on the City Council since 1976, has been elected mayor by the council. She succeeds Godfrey Pernell. Councilwoman Jody Murdock was elected mayor pro tem.

Swanson said she hopes to see progress in the city’s effort to slow the Flying Triangle landslide, which has destroyed several residences in the southwest part of the city. The city is seeking to coordinate efforts with Rancho Palos Verdes to get Congress and the Army Corps of Engineers to pay for a study of measures to halt shoreline erosion caused by the Flying Triangle slide and the Portuguese Bend landslide. The Portuguese Bend slide is in Rancho Palos Verdes, beneath the Flying Triangle slide.

Last year, Congress passed legislation authorizing the Corps of Engineers to study different methods of containing erosion but did not appropriate any money for it.
