Bicycle Racing Doubleheader Scheduled for 8 a.m. and Noon Sunday in Hollywood

Bicycle racing fans will get a rare doubleheader Sunday when two nationally ranked races are held in the Hollywood area.

The Ocean Spray West Hollywood Criterium, with a field that includes Olympic medalists Davis Phinney, Thurlow Rogers, Leonard Harvey Nitz and Rebecca Twigg Whitehead, will bring together professionals and high-rated amateurs for a series of races starting at 8 a.m. The 7/10-mile course encircles the Pacific Design Center.

Defending champions are Max Sciandri of West Hollywood and Michele Veasey of Newport Beach.

The Nabisco Hollywood Mayor’s Cup, part of a 14-city series, will start at noon at the intersection of Hollywood and Vine--two miles from where the morning racing will conclude at West Hollywood Park on San Vicente Blvd. The 4/10-mile course is through Hollywood streets.

“We want to bill Sunday as the biggest day of bicycle racing in Southern California since the ’84 Olympics,” said Tom Kaplan, project director for the West Hollywood race. Entry fees will benefit Meals on Wheels, a food-service program for seniors and shut-ins.

More than 400 licensed riders are expected to compete in one or both of the street races.
