The U.S. House by voice vote passed a compromise bill to protect 92 miles of the Kings River in Central California. The bill, sponsored by Reps. Richard H. Lehman (D-Sanger) and Charles Pashayan Jr. (R-Fresno), would put 81 miles of the river into the national Wild and Scenic Rivers classification. It would also forbid dams along another 11 miles, including a proposed site, without an act of Congress. Senate action on the bill is not likely before late spring, but passage is expected. Both California senators, Republican Pete Wilson and Democrat Alan Cranston, support the bill.
