American Telephone & Telegraph Co. has laid off 760 more workers at a North Andover, Mass., plant, blaming an unprecedented decline in orders for transmission equipment. The cuts, effective May 8, bring to 1,500 the number of jobs lost at the Merrimack Valley Works plant since January. The layoffs are separate from a companywide reduction of 27,400 jobs announced late last year.
