Specially trained workers wearing masks removed two barrels containing asbestos fiber from a barn that burned near Redding. A controlled burn of weeds in the area spread to the barn, where the 55-gallon barrels were stored, forcing evacuation of the rural residential area south of Redding, near California 273. Assistant Fire Chief Don Kemp said one firefighter suffered minor burns. Kern County environmental control workers later assisted in removing the barrels to a hazardous waste dump.
