WASHINGTON — Prime Minister Luis Alva Castro of Peru announced today that he is calling a special meeting of the United States and other Western Hemisphere governments to discuss Latin America’s $382-billion debt.
The meeting will take place in Washington on June 29-30. As of September, Latin American and Caribbean countries owed U.S. banks $67.7 billion, and the balance of their debt is held elsewhere.
Alva chairs the Inter-American Economic and Social Council, which includes 31 governments in the hemisphere.
“This is not meant as a confrontation,” he told a news conference. “What we want is to bring the whole hemisphere together.”
He said that since 1970 the council has not held a meeting at the Cabinet level. The U.S. government has expressed great interest in this one, he added.
