New York Rep. Jack Kemp will give up his position as chairman of the House Republican leadership conference to devote more time to campaigning for the presidency, an aide said. Kemp spokesman David Hoppe said no official date has been set for Kemp to relinquish the post he has held since 1981, but added: “It’ll be in the near term.” Kemp officially declared his candidacy on April 6 and will continue making that declaration several more times this month, in more than 20 cities.
