Headed by Jim Rice of the Boston Red Sox at $2.4 million, 57 major league baseball players will earn at least $1 million this year, according to a report in the New York Times.
The Times, quoting unidentified management and player sources, also reported the Dodgers have baseball’s highest payroll with an average salary per player of $579,785. Seattle has the lowest average, $181,580. The overall major league average is $412,606.
After Rice, the highest-paid players are Kansas City reliever Dan Quisenberry, $2.29 million a year; Royals’ third baseman George Brett, $2.2 million; Baltimore first baseman Eddie Murray, $2.15 million; and Philadelphia third baseman Mike Schmidt, $2.13 million.
