A painting by French impressionist Edouard Manet that was lost for 99 years and discovered by accident four years ago has been placed on public exhibition for the first time this week in the Portuguese territory of Macao. “Femme Assise (Paysage)” was missing since the artist’s death in 1883 until June, 1982, when it was sold as an unsigned work by an unknown artist at a Lisbon auction for 72,000 escudos--about $460. Manet’s signature in the lower right-hand corner was discovered by accident during routine cleaning about a month later. The painting, now in the hands of a Lisbon museum, is being displayed in Macao in a bid to forge closer cultural links between East and West, officials said.
