ELOTA, Mexico — A bus carrying engineering students to a class project in northwestern Mexico went out of control and collided with a dump truck Friday, killing 14 people and injuring 43, federal highway police said.
The crash occurred in the Pacific coast state of Sinaloa near the town of Elota, 756 miles northwest of Mexico City.
Police said 10 students and two professors from the Sinaloa Autonomous University’s School of Engineering were killed instantly along with the bus driver and his assistant. The driver of the truck was slightly injured and both vehicles were destroyed.
The students had been traveling from Culiacan south to the Pacific resort city of Mazatlan, where they were to work on an urban transportation project, university officials said.
