COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS : Master’s Wins in 10th Inning

Junior shortstop Eric Beagles hit a two-run home run with two out in the bottom of the 10th inning as The Master’s College beat Biola for the first time in 13 years, 8-6, in an NAIA District III game Friday at Master’s.

Tom Mathis hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to give Master’s (13-14, 8-3 in District III) a 3-2 lead. In the sixth inning, Steve Reyes hit a solo home run and Chris Hernandez had a two-run single to increase the Master’s lead to 6-2. Biola (12-15, 4-4) scored four in the seventh to tie the game.

Beagles was 2 for 3, scored twice and had two runs batted in. Hernandez was 2 for 5 with one RBI for Master’s.

SOFTBALL

Judy Violett’s two-run bunt highlighted a four-run sixth inning as the Moorpark softball team shut out Pierce, 4-0, to remain undefeated in the Western State Conference. Karen Mead (15-7) scattered four hits and had 11 strikeouts for Moorpark (15-8, 8-0 in conference). Malia Ouzts of Moorpark was 3 for 3 with 3 stolen bases and Violett had two hits and two RBIs. Pierce dropped to 9-9 and 5-3.

SWIMMING

Brent Hermanson won two events to lead Pierce (3-3) to a 63-40 victory over Ventura in a Western State Conference meet at Ventura. Hermanson won the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.2) and the 200 breaststroke (2:22.6). He also finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:53.9). Dave Utter of Pierce won the 1,000 freestyle (11:08.3).

In the women’s meet, Kim Reese won two events and anchored the winning 200 freestyle relay team, but Pierce (2-4) lost to Ventura, 93-38. Reese won the 50 freestyle (26.3) and the 100 backstroke (1:07.81). She placed second in the 50 backstroke (31.1). Reese teamed with Laura Jean Martin, Cris Koeser and Linda Drucker as Pierce won the 200 freestyle relay team won in 1:53.9.

Jeremy Bauman won the 500 freestyle (5:06.2) and the 1,000 freestyle (10:36.5) to lead Valley (5-1) to a 60-44 win over Cuesta (4-2) in a Western State Conference meet.

In the women’s meet, Shawna Sacks won the 200 freestyle (2.03.8) and the 500 freestyle (5.36.1) but Valley (2-4) lost to Cuesta (6-0), 80-50.

VOLLEYBALL

Erik Peters had 12 kills and Joe Sorenson had 10 as Pierce defeated Mt. San Antonio College, 15-3, 15-5, 15-8, in a Western State Conference match at Pierce. Darin Hansen and Austin Johnson had six blocks each for Pierce.
