A Navy enlisted man suffered relatively minor injuries when he fell 175 feet from the edge of a “lover’s leap” in San Pedro. Los Angeles Police Lt. Ted Oglesby said Phillip Perkins, 21, a crewman on the battleship New Jersey, was talking with girlfriend Lisa Manjarrez, 19, on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in San Pedro when he slipped over the edge. “She had her back to the guy and when she turned around he had just disappeared,” Oglesby said. “He got too close to the edge.” Perkins, who suffered a broken arm and minor injuries to the lower back and pelvis, was rescued by a helicopter after spending nearly an hour at the bottom of the cliff. He was in fair condition at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
