A 25-year-old Chula Vista construction worker was electrocuted Thursday when a light pole he was guiding from a crane struck a high-tension line.
Police said Jimmy Floyd Peterson and a crew were setting light standards in the 1000 block of Peach Avenue. Peterson was standing on the sidewalk and guiding the base of a light pole that was being moved by a crane when the top of the beam swung and hit an overhead line.
Thomas Kistler, a Fire Department spokesman, said a 12,000-volt charge went down the pole and into Peterson. James Earl Hickman of Lakeside, who was maneuvering the crane, attempted to help Peterson, who was clinging to the pole, but when Hickman tried to push Peterson aside, he also was jolted.
Paramedics took Peterson to AMI Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Hickman was treated for minor injuries at the hospital.
