OTHER SPORTS : Northridge’s Sitton Named All-District 8
Denise Sitton of Cal State Northridge has been selected to the Kodak All-District 8 team by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Assn.
Sitton, a 6-1 forward, led the Lady Matadors in scoring (19.5) and rebounding (9.8) last season and scored a school-record 1,467 points in her four-year career.
Home-field disadvantage: Cal Lutheran’s women’s softball team was eliminated in three games at its own tournament last weekend. The University of San Diego beat UC San Diego, 13-7, in the championship game to win the title. La Verne finished third.
After beating Loyola Marymount in the first round, CLU lost to the University of San Diego, 2-1, and Azusa Pacific, 3-2, and was eliminated. Karen Fauver and Becky Wolfe of Cal Lutheran were named to the all-tournament team.
Gymnastics qualifiers: Terisa Lacert and Monica Mayes of Northridge have qualified for the NCAA Division II gymnastics championships April 10-11 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Lacert, a freshman, finished sixth in all-around competition in the West regionals in Sacramento last weekend. Her score of 34.96 was a personal best. Mayes, a senior, scored 34.83 to place seventh. The top eight finishers qualified for the nationals. Northridge placed third in the team standings behind first-place Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Seattle-Pacific.
The Northridge softball team outscored opponents, 25-2, to win seven straight games and the championship of the Cal State Hayward tournament last weekend.
Freshman Debbie Dickman was selected the Most Valuable Pitcher and Priscilla Rouse won the tournament’s top hitter award.
Lisa Martin, Lori Shelly, Kelly Winn and Barbara Jordan were also all-tournament.
The football alumni game that traditionally brought Northridge spring practice to a close has been scrapped by Coach Bob Burt in favor of an intrasquad game. It will be played May 2.
A golf tournament benefiting the Northridge football team will be held May 4 at the Woodland Hills Country Club. Entry fee of $100 includes 18 holes of golf, use of a golf cart, tee gifts and a prime rib dinner.

Northridge track and field teams qualified five more athletes for the Division II national championships and broke six school records at the Stanford Invitational.
National qualifiers were Colleen Gainey and Scott Pittel (205-9) in the javelin, Tina Cheney in the 3,000 meters, Lolita Pile (39-8 3/4) in the triple jump and Heather Brookes in the 10,000.
Pile and Pittel set school records in the process, as did Darcey Arreola, who ran a freshman-record 9:52.4 in the 3,000. Three CSUN relay teams also set school records at the meet.
The Pierce College tennis team remained undefeated in Western State Conference matches with an 8-1 victory over Glendale on Tuesday. Pierce is 13-0 in conference, 14-2 overall and ranked No. 1 in the state.
