Soviet speedskater Andrei Bobrov set a world record in the 1,500-meter event at the high-altitude Medeo rink in Kazakhstan. Competing in a Soviet speedskating cup event, Bobrov, 22, was timed in 1 minute 52.46 seconds, bettering the mark of 1:52.70 set by countryman Nikolai Gulyayev at Heereveen, Netherlands, this year.
