Coretta Scott King, widow of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., urged Congress to enact legislation that would create 3 million minimum-wage public works jobs. King addressed a Senate subcommittee on employment and productivity on behalf of the National Committee for Full Employment and the Full Employment Action Council. Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told the panel that he recently stood on a Las Vegas street corner and watched the jobless jostle for work as day laborers. “People literally fight for those jobs,†he said.
