Tennis Roundup : Krickstein, Suffering From a Davis Cup Hangover, Falls in First Round

Aaron Krickstein felt like he had a hangover, and played like it.

Krickstein, who lost to Victor Pecci of Paraguay in the deciding match of a first-round Davis Cup defeat Sunday, was upset by Scott Davis, 6-3, 6-0, in the first round of the $315,000 Paine Webber tournament Wednesday at Orlando, Fla.

“It’s still on my mind,� said Krickstein, seeded seventh in the tournament. “It’s hard to just drop it when you lose a decisive match in the Davis Cup the way I did. It’s just kind of difficult to come back and play again a day later on a different surface (hardcourt, rather than clay).

“I can’t make excuses, but I wasn’t ready to play from the beginning.�

Davis, 24, broke Krickstein in the fifth game of the first set, then won 9 of 10 games to close out the match in 57 minutes. Krickstein arrived Tuesday from Asuncion, Paraguay.

Sixth-seeded Robert Seguso, who teamed with Ken Flach to win the doubles in the Davis Cup match on Saturday, met a similar fate.

Eliot Teltscher upset Seguso, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

“I felt so lost in the beginning,� Seguso said. “I was so drained. My mind just wasn’t there.�

Added Teltscher: “I knew he was going to be a little tired. At the beginning, I thought he was still in Paraguay. Then he played much better, but I was playing pretty good too.�

Teltscher broke Seguso three times to take the opening set in 23 minutes. Seguso won the second set with a service break in the 10th game, but Teltscher broke Seguso in the ninth game of the final set and held serve to win the match.

In another first-round match, second-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador defeated unseeded Brad Pearce, 6-3, 6-3.

In second-round matches, third-seeded Tim Mayotte defeated Christo Steyn, 6-4, 7-5, fourth-seeded Brad Gilbert beat Matt Anger, 6-1, 7-6, and eighth-seeded Tim Wilkison turned back Eddie Edwards, 6-1, 6-4.

Second-seeded Pam Shriver defeated Lisa Bonder, 6-3, 6-3, and third-seeded Zina Garrison routed Tina Mochizuki, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Virginia Slims of Dallas women’s tournament.

Shriver had a 5-0 lead in the second set before easing up.

Garrison, ranked seventh in the world, overcame a troublesome serve to improve her 1987 match record to 17-2.

Earlier in the day, Dianne Fromholtz Balestrat of Australia defeated Raffaella Reggi of Italy, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4, and Kate Gompert ousted Catherine Tanvier of France, 6-1, 7-6, first-round matches.
