An unknown gunman fatally wounded a 37-year-old man as he stood in front of his Old Town home, San Diego police said.
Victor Trujillo Varela was standing in front of his home in the 2200 block of Congress Street about midnight Tuesday, talking with a friend, when an unidentified man walked toward them and opened fire on Varela with a handgun, hitting him several times in the upper body and missing the other man, Sgt. Micki Farrell said.
Varela was rushed to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The gunman fled on foot, Farrell said. He was last seen wearing a black-hooded shirt emblazoned with small stars and half-moons.
