American Nick Thometz clinched the World Cup 500-meter speed skating title with a second-place finish at Inzell, West Germany, in the final race of the season. Thometz won the 1,000-meter title on Saturday.
Akira Kuroiwa of Japan won the race in a track record 37.13 seconds. Thometz finished in 37.18, and Sergei Fokitschev of the Soviet Union was third in 37.41.
Thometz, 23, from Minnetonka, Minn., finished with 202 points, while Kuroiwa had 196. American Dan Jansen was third at 155.
