SAN DIEGO SECTION BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS : 1-A GIRLS: Calvin Christian vs. Holtville
Site--Sports Arena.
Time--10:30 a.m.
Records--Calvin Christian 19-4; Holtville 15-6.
Last meeting--Holtville, 45-39 (March, 1986).
Calvin Christian update--The Crusaders return to the 1-A championship game with basically the same team they had last season. Senior center Mary Andringa, the Coastal League’s player of the year, has led them with 17 points and 17 rebounds a game. Sophomore point guard Betsy Wilgenburg, 5-9, has developed into the player who “runs the team,†Coach Frank Zuidema said. Despite its dominance in the Coastal League, Calvin Christian has been inconsistent, Zuidema said. “We’ve had some good quarters and we’ve had quarters where we’ve scored like four points.
Holtville update--Center Claudia Garcia is the only player whose scoring average is in double figures (14 points a game). However, Garcia, her twin, Claudina, and forward Dina Patzloff combine to form a solid front line that can usually outrebound opponents. The Vikings press aggressively and tend to win more games with defense than offense.
Key to the game--Expect a low-scoring game as these defense-oriented teams square off. Calvin Christian has yet to score more than 50 points this season. Holtville’s opponents have averaged just 34 points a game. Calvin Christian did not press in last season’s 1-A championship game but has since developed a more flexible defense. Holtville Coach Mike Pacheco said the game will largely hinge on how effectively his front line can contain Andringa’s scoring and rebounding.
