USC is 4-0 in conference play under former Canyons Coach Mike Gillespie.

Doug Simons of Woodland Hills recorded his first save of the season to preserve Pepperdine’s 6-5 victory over Loyola Marymount in a West Coast Athletic Conference game Friday at Pepperdine.

Angela Burnham, who last year became the first freshman ever to win the California 100-meter championship, leads a talented group of local high school track and field performers into today’s Spartan Relays at Rio Mesa High in Oxnard.

Burnham’s time of 11.77 seconds for the 100 meters in 1986 was the fastest clocking in the nation for a ninth-grader. She also ran the swiftest 200 meters among the nation’s freshmen. Burnham attends Rio Mesa High School.

Other girls entered in the meet include Christy Farrell of Thousand Oaks, who was sixth in the 3,200-meter run in the state meet last year; Sharon Manship of Thousand Oaks, a multi-event athlete who was seventh in the 1986 state meet in the 300-meter low hurdles, and Desiree Joubert of Westlake Village, who was third in the 800 meters at the state meet and seventh in the 1,600.

On the boys’ side, Russell White, Crespi High’s talented running back, will compete in the sprints and relays.
