After watching his team win its first three playoff games by a total of 12 points, Saugus High School Coach John Clark didn’t know what to expect Friday night against Tustin. He simply didn’t know how much more his players had left.
Afterward, Clark was all too happy to announce that he still didn’t have an answer.
Greg Weber scored eight of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter to lead Saugus to a 59-56 victory over Tustin in a 3-A Southern Section quarterfinal at College of the Canyons.
Saugus trailed, 43-37, at the end of the third quarter but came back behind an aggressive defense and solid free-throw shooting. The Centurions (20-9) made 10 of their 13 free throws in the fourth quarter, including 6 of 8 by Weber.
The game was close in the first half, but Tustin (21-6) went on a 9-0 run and took a 43-35 lead in the closing minutes of the third quarter. Saugus tied the score, 47-47 with 4 1/2 minutes left and did not trail after taking a 51-50 lead with two minutes left. Saugus made 7 of 8 free throws in the last two minutes to seal the victory.
