West Germany and Syria have quietly healed a rift in relations caused by European allegations that Syria sponsored international terrorism, a diplomatic source in Damascus said. The source said that President Hafez Assad’s government has approved Georg H. Schlingensiepen as Bonn’s new ambassador. The post has been vacant since November, when the two countries expelled each others’ ambassadors after West Germany said that an Arab convicted of a West Berlin bombing got the explosives from the Syrian Embassy in East Berlin.
