Oceanside
A blocked sewer pipe near a treatment plant in Oceanside caused more than 15,000 gallons of effluent to pour into the ocean Wednesday, prompting a quarantine on a 100-yard stretch of beach, county health department officials said.
John Melbourn, a San Diego County public health engineer, said signs warning against swimming on Buckaneer Beach would probably be in place until Friday morning.
Because recent rains have filled a creek that empties out at the beach, officials expect the contamination to be diluted more quickly than in drier months.
