Ceramic Tile Institute Makes Awards : Veteran Staffer Joanne Tomlinson Named Woman of the Year
Joanne Tomlinson, a staff member of the Ceramic Tile Institute, Hollywood, was honored as tile Woman of the Year at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. The program came at the end of the institute’s three-day seminar Saturday.
A veteran of 20 years service to the tile industry, Tomlinson has spent nearly 1,000 hours working at the institute’s seminars.
Bill Fay, president of C-B Tile Corp., Canoga Park, received the institute’s Golden Tile Award for outstanding service to the tile industry. He is the second person from C-B to win this award.
Donald Schwarz, president of Selectile of California, Los Angeles, was named Contractor of the Year by the Western States Ceramic Tile Contractor’s Assn. He was last year’s winner of the Golden Tile Award.
Bill Armstrong, financial secretary of Tilesetters Local 18, International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen, was the recipient of the Manny Fleishman Special Recognition Award. He has been active in the union and tile industry for almost three decades.

Masters Award--Master Tilers for Orange County Performing Arts Center, Costa Mesa. Architects: a joint venture of the Blureck Partnership, Newport Beach, and Caudill Rowlett Scott, Newport Beach.
Masters Award--Selectile of California for The Colony at Mandalay Bay, Oxnard. Architect: Corbin/Yamafuji & Partners, Inc., Irvine.
Masters Awards (2)--Herman Schock Tile Co. for Gantz residence, Woodland Hills, and Home Savings of America, Northridge. Architect on Gantz residence: Clyde Smith, Woodland Hills, and designer for Home Savings: Dennis O’Connor Mosaics, Claremont.
Masters Award--Venetian Tile Co. for KCIN--Phase 1--office building in Koll Center, Irvine. Architect: Langdon Wilson/Mumper/POD, Los Angeles.
Masters Award--Tile Trends for Westridge Homes, Calabasas. Architect: William A. Pauli, Calabasas.
Judges Awards (2)--Ralph R. McIntosh Tile for private residence swimming pool and West Angeles Church of God. Architect for West Angeles Church: Benno Fisher, Los Angeles.
Judges Awards (3)--Mercury Tile Co. for Kawasaki Motors, Irvine; Wells Fargo Building, Pasadena, and Fountain Wood model and tract in Simi Valley.
Judges Award--Herman Schock Tile Co. for Bruce Martin residence, Woodland Hills. Architect was also builder: Ray Norvell, Encino.
Judges Award--C-B Tile for Tarzana Medical Plaza, Tarzana. Designer: Benton/Park/Candreva, Santa Monica.
