A former Monterey Park police officer was sentenced to 90 days in jail and two years’ probation and was fined $300 after being convicted of brandishing a gun on the San Bernardino Freeway in March, 1985, and filing a false report on the incident. The jail sentence for Kenneth Vest, 25, was stayed pending appeal. A second former officer, Rafael Mercado, also 25, who was acquitted of the firearm count but convicted of false reporting, was sentenced to two years’ probation and given a similar fine. No one was injured in the incident, which occurred after the officers argued with occupants of a second car on the freeway near West Covina.
