El Salvador’s armed forces launched counterinsurgency operations aimed at driving leftist guerrillas from strongholds in five of the nation’s 14 provinces, officials said. Heavy fighting was reported in eastern San Miguel province, about 83 miles from the capital. Large operations were also reported in Morazan province, long a rebel redoubt, and in the provinces of Cuscatlan, Chalatenango and Cabanas. The rebel’s clandestine radio station said that 10 soldiers were killed or wounded in the San Miguel fighting.
