WASHINGTON — The Air Force disclosed today that it successfully launched a Titan 3B booster carrying a classified payload, possibly some type of electronic listening satellite, from its launch center at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on Wednesday night.
Air Force Secretary Edward C. Aldridge hailed the launch as “the first major step in the recovery of the (Defense Department) space program” since the loss of the shuttle Challenger just over a year ago. The Titan launch at 10:40 p.m. PST placed the classified payload into a polar orbit.
