Rosemead : Study on Latchkey Program

The Garvey School District has voted to hire a consultant to look into its latchkey program, which is running a deficit.
The consultant will explore ways of cutting costs or might recommend discontinuing the program.
The state-funded program, which provides after-school child care, requires that half the students pay the full cost. Garvey, which was to receive $100,000 from the state for a year beginning last April, was unable to find enough full-pay students, so its allocation was cut to $59,000.
The district has already incurred a deficit of $55,000 and expects the shortfall to rise to $66,000 by June.
The district serves 60 subsidized children and 44 full-pay children at four school sites.
