Greek pop composer Vangelis, who has given only five public recitals of his electronic music in the last 12 years, performed Wednesday in London’s High Court in a copyright case. Vangelis--real name Evangelos Papathanasiou--is accused of breach of copyright by EMI Music Publishing Ltd., which says his “Chariots of Fire” music is a copy of a piece called “City of Violets,” composed by another Greek musician, Stavros Logarides. At the judge’s request, the 43-year-old Vangelis played two of his works on an electronic synthesizer. Vangelis said he prefers “to work quietly. I have never been very happy about public performances because they take a lot of time and you can never concentrate.” The trial continued today.
