Andy Hawkins of the San Diego Padres won his arbitration case, but Ken Phelps of the Seattle Mariners lost his.
Hawkins, who had a 10-8 record and a 4.34 earned-run average last season, was awarded $535,000 for this year, $85,000 more than the Padres had offered. Hawkins made $300,000 in 1986.
Phelps, a first baseman who batted .247, hit 24 homers and drove in 64 runs, was asking for $515,000 but will be paid $300,000. Last season, he earned $235,000.
In a case not involving arbitration, Mike Moore, a pitcher for the Mariners, agreed to a $500,000 salary, with another $50,000 in incentives, after an 11-13 year. Moore was paid $400,000 last season.
