Malibu : GM Scraps Design Center Plan

General Motors has notified the California Coastal Commission that it is abandoning its plan to build an $11-million design center in Malibu.
A lawyer for GM said in a letter delivered to the commission Monday that “new geological information” has forced the company to abandon the project. Commission and Los Angeles County officials had said earlier that two active faults were discovered on the site in November.
State law prohibits placing most buildings on active faults. The only exceptions are single-family homes and facilities not intended for human habitation.
GM had planned to build the 85,000-square-foot building on a 24-acre site on Pacific Coast Highway across from Pepperdine University.
