San Diego High School Basketball : METRO CONFERENCE
Castle Park 77, Southwest 66--Javier Nunez scored 25 points to lead Castle Park at home. Leading 51-49 entering the fourth period, Castle Park (7-0, 14-4) outscored Southwest (1-6, 2-13), 26-17. Vince Bucca scored 16 points and Brian Cauley added 15 for Castle Park. Johnny Walker paced Southwest with 24 points.
PALOMAR LEAGUE
Mt. Carmel 45, Poway 38--Mt. Carmel went to a spread offense with 2 1/2 minutes remaining and then hit 8 of 8 free throw attempts for the victory at home. Eric Olander scored 15 points and Mike Wasserburger added 12 for Mt. Carmel (6-1, 15-3). Ty Nichols scored 11 to lead Poway (1-6, 9-10).
Orange Glen 73, Torrey Pines 71--Dan Early scored 29 of his game-high 33 points in the first half to lead host Orange Glen (2-5, 6-14). Early was 14 of 20 from the field and grabbed 9 rebounds. With Torrey Pines (5-2) trailing by one, 72-71, with three seconds remaining, Falcon Scot Thompson missed two free throws.
AVOCADO LEAGUE
Ramona 78, Carlsbad 65--Ramona was 26 of 35 from the free-throw line (17 of 20 in the second half) to rally to the victory at Carlsbad. Carlsbad led 40-35 at the half, but was outscored 18-10 in the third period and 25-15 in the fourth. Ramona’s John Leichty scored a game-high 35 points.
Escondido 68, San Pasqual 52--John Lovett scored 18 points and Paul Baldwin added 17 to lead Escondido. San Pasqual (0-7, 2-15) pulled within two points early in the fourth quarter, but Escondido (5-2, 8-8) took advantage of several turnovers to outscore San Pasqual 23-12 in the fourth. Todd Brose’s 15 points paced San Pasqual.
El Camino 80, San Marcos 64--Lee Cobb scored 25 points and Garrett Crayton added 19 to lead El Camino (6-1, 16-3). San Marcos (3-4, 10-9) was paced by Shawn Sweitzer’s 18 points. El Camino outscored San Marcos 25-11 in the third quarter.
CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE
Lincoln 88, San Diego 55--Ken Thompson scored 27 points to lead Lincoln (5-0, 12-5). Alonzo Taylor and Kenny Hawkins added 13 apiece for Lincoln, which outscored San Diego (0-5, 0-14).
Hoover 77, St. Augustine 74--Tyrone Bell scored 30 points and Michael Walker added 19 for the win at Hoover. Tony Thompson broke the Hoover High game-assist record with 15. Bob Brinn had 13 for Hoover in 1974. Hoover (3-2) rallied for the victory, outscoring St. Augustine, 29-19, in the fourth period. The Saints (1-4) were led by Charlie Applegate (24 points), Doug Carter (20 points) and Tony Evenson (19 points).

CITY EASTERN LEAGUE Madison 50, Patrick Henry 35--Jeff Alexander scored a game-high 15 points to lead Madison (4-1, 13-5). With seven minutes remaining, Madison led 38-33. But Henry (2-3, 9-8) could score only one basket as Madison outscored the Patriots 12-2.
Mira Mesa 53, Serra 44--Mira Mesa (3-2, 15-4) converted Serra’s 14 turnovers into fast breaks for the win at Mira Mesa. Serra, which trailed 33-17 at the half, scored 12 straight points, 6 from Todd Knight, in the final period, but couldn’t overcome its first-half deficit. Mike Eicher paced Mira Mesa with 11 points. Knight led Serra (2-15, 0-5) with 17.
CITY WESTERN LEAGUE University City 53, Clairemont 49--Clairemont opened the fourth period with 10 straight to take the lead, 47-43, but lost the ball on its last eight possessions at Clairemont. UC (2-3, 6-11) was 21 of 31 from the line. Ray McDavid led Clairemont (3-2, 13-5) with 15 points.
Mission Bay 51, La Jolla 46 (OT)--Dwain Smith was 4 of 4 from the line in the overtime period to pace host Mission Bay. Smith finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds for Mission Bay (1-4, 6-9). Adam Cleid paced La Jolla (2-3) with 24 points.
GROSSMONT LEAGUE Mount Miguel 58, Granite Hills 48--Granite Hills scored the first five points of the third quarter to take an 8-point lead, but Mount Miguel then scored 18 straight to avenge an earlier loss. Anthony Rivera led Mount Miguel (8-3, 10-7) with 23 points. Jon Tenney paced Granite Hills (5-6, 6-11) with 13.
Monte Vista 43, El Cajon 40--In the third period, El Cajon was one-for-eight from the field and one-for-six from the line in this presentation of poor shooting at Monte Vista. El Cajon led, 20-12, at the half, after Monte Vista shot 22% from the field in the first half. P.J. Panebianco paced El Cajon (4-6, 8-8) with 22 points. Wayne Hallman had 15 for Monte Vista (9-2, 12-4).
Valhalla 69, Grossmont 62--Valhalla’s zone defense shutdown Grossmont in the first half, as the Norseman took a 43-28 lead at intermission. Troy Toolson paced Valhalla (8-3, 12-5) with 22 points. Noel Gillespie paced Grossmont with 16.
GIRLS
CITY EASTERN LEAGUE Point Loma 94, Morse 29--Terri Mann had 45 points and 31 rebounds to pace Point Loma (5-0, 23-0) to its 48th consecutive win. Pointer Lisa Carrillo added 29, including 14 of 15 from the field. A solid man-to-man defense allowed Point Loma to lead 57-12 at the half. Morse is 1-4 and 1-9.
CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE
Crawford 65, Christian 36--Karla Salmi scored 23 points and Carmella Hicks added 15 to lead Crawford (5-0, 17-1) at Christian. Crawford took a 31-13 lead at the half.
