British Parliament Kills Bill to Let Pubs Open All Day

LONDON — Parliament killed a bill Friday that would have allowed pubs in England and Wales to stay open all day, leaving intact the World War I law that forces them to close for a few hours in mid-afternoon.
The bill was killed by filibuster as the debate in Parliament went beyond the two-hour limit set for the proposal.
The measure would have permitted Britain’s nearly 50,000 pubs to stay open for any 12 of the 14 hours between 10 a.m. and midnight.
Pubs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland generally are open for nine hours: from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on weekdays. Pubs in London and major cities can stay open until 11 p.m.
