Abortion Debate and the New Pill

I am outraged by Thomas’ arrogance in presuming to be the moral judge for all Americans on the issue of abortion. Not only is he out of step with the majority of Americans in his anti-choice vehemence, but he is plain wrong in stating that the pro-choice conscience is in retreat.

Studies have shown that RU-486 is “less traumatic to a woman’s body than surgical abortion.†As the latest and safest option, it should be available to women. The FDA should approve RU-486 for sound medical reasons, rather than reject it because of the morals of an anti-choice minority. Doing so both fulfills the principle of freedom of choice and the quest for medical excellence on which this country prides itself and its citizens have the right to expect.

The decision of when and if to have children is an intensely personal one. I believe Thomas’ real desire is to return us to the horrifying days of illegal abortion, with forced childbearing or mutilation or death from back alley “doctors.â€
