WINTER SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Franklin Breaks Own School Record With 43 Points to Lead Taft, 82-70
Taft High’s Kevin Franklin put on another shooting exhibition in Friday night’s Valley League game at Reseda High, scoring a school-record 43 points. After being held to 17 points in the first half, Franklin exploded for 26 in the second half and led Taft to a 82-70 victory over Reseda.
Reseda led at halftime, 40-32, but Franklin scored 12 third-quarter points to give Taft (10-3, 2-2 in league) a commanding 57-48 lead.
Franklin was virtually unstoppable in the second half and made 13 of 15 free throws in the game. The 43 points broke his previous career best of 38 points.
Teammmate Vernon Middleton was the only other Taft player in double figures with 12 points.
Five players scored in double figures for Reseda (4-6, 0-3). Joe Crawford led the Regents with 18 points.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Alemany 68, Crespi 55--Alemany outscored Crespi, 12-0, at the beginning of the Del Rey League game. Led by senior center Bill Lucid with 20 points, Alemany (11-4, 3-0 in league) took a 36-26 halftime lead. Forward Dave Swanson added 16 points.
Crespi pulled to within eight points with three minutes to play, but was then forced to foul in the final seconds. Alemany made five of its final eight free throws. Crespi’s Ken Lynch had 11 rebounds and Matt Turner had nine assists.
Granada Hills 94, Monroe 56--Gary Gray, the Valley’s No. 3 scorer, had game-high totals of 33 points, 19 rebounds and 7 assists as Granada Hills streaked to a 28-8 first quarter lead in the Northwest Valley League opener at Monroe. Gray, who averages 27.4 points, made 14 of 20 shots and 5 of 7 free throws. Teammate Terrell Smith scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Roosevelt Johnson led Monroe with 15 points.
Canoga Park 57, Chatsworth 52--Darwin Garnett and Orel Elrington scored 15 points apiece, and Fred Wilson and Craig Galowitsch each added 10 for Canoga Park in the Northwest Valley League game at Chatsworth. For Chatsworth (4-5, 0-1 in league), center Kendell McDaniel had game-high totals of 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Stuart Thompson had 11 points and 8 rebounds.
Elrington had 10 rebounds and David Waco had 8 assists for Canoga Park.
After trailing 37-23 at the half, Chatsworth pulled to within five points with six minutes remaining but the Chancellors missed four free throws and four layups in the next four minutes and were never able to catch Canoga Park (6-4, 1-0 in league). Chatsworth made only four of 11 free throws in the game.
Hart 60, San Gabriel 57--Guard Jim Bonds scored a game-high 17 points, including five of six free throws in the last 90 seconds for Hart in a Foothill League game. Hart’s Chris Chouinard made two free throws with 10 seconds remaining after he was intentionally fouled to seal the victory. Hart (7-7, 1-0 in league) retained possession of the ball and was able to run out the clock.
Forward Eric Arnold scored 12 points and guards Steve Valenzuela and Mike Michelson had 11 and 10 respectively for Hart. San Gabriel (13-3, 0-1 in league) was led by guard Mike Roland with 16 points. Center Andy Bojarski had 14 and forward Ruben Zuniga had 12 for the Matadors.
Burbank 56, Alhambra 52--Three Alhambra players fouled out in the last four minutes and Burbank went on to win the Foothill League game. Bryan Chandler led Burbank with a game-high 22 points. Chris Buck added 15. Scott Mena led Alhambra with 14 points before fouling out along with Rich Cordero and Cecil Wang, who scored 11 points.
Grant 53, Verdugo Hills 46--Junior forward Mike Fried scored 14 points and center Jason Schirn, nursing a sprained ankle, came off the bench to score 12 points and grab 10 rebounds as Grant rallied in the second half to win the East Valley League opener for both teams.
With his team trailing 22-21 at halftime, Schirn keyed a decisive third quarter with six points as Grant (5-6) took a 33-28 margin and extended it to 10 points with three minutes left in the game. Sophomore Eli Levy added 10 points for the Lancers.
Thousand Oaks 42, Camarillo 33--Forward John Schlossman and guard Robert McLaughlin scored 13 points each to lead Thousand Oaks (8-5, 3-0 in league) to the Marmonte League win at Thousand Oaks.
Van Nuys 55, North Hollywood 54--Ron Lewis made two free throws with six seconds left in overtime to give Van Nuys (4-6, 1-0 in league) the East Valley League victory at Van Nuys.
Lewis, who scored a team-high 17 points, was sent to the line after being fouled while rebounding a shot by Alonzo Galloway. Brothers Dominic and Peter Nappi led North Hollywood (0-1 in league) with 17 points each.
Newbury Park 59, Royal 51--Dan Ryan had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Wayne Cook had 14 points and 9 rebounds for Newbury Park (6-8, 1-2 in league) in the Marmonte League game. Roger Greene scored 19 points for Royal (0-11, 0-3 in league).
Notre Dame 55, St. John Bosco 44--Notre Dame (3-8, 1-1 in league) recorded the Del Rey league victory at St. John Bosco, despite a game-high 21 points by St. John Bosco’s Kelvin Means. Josh Oppenhiemer led Notre Dame with 18 points. Kurt Schmiederer had 12 points. St. John Bosco (3-10, 0-2 in league) trailed 30-19 at halftime.
Santa Ynez 62, Oak Park 54--Santa Ynez scored 20 straight third-quarter points to take its first lead and went on to win the Tri-Valley League game. Oak Park (3-6, 0-1 in league) closed to within 54-50 with two minutes to play, but Craig McCullough and Steve Sperling sank two free throws each to carry Santa Ynez to victory. McCullough led Santa Ynez with 14 points and Sperling had 13. Brian Friefeld led Oak Park with a game-high 29 points.
South Bay Lutheran 58, Highland Hall 54--Brad Emerling led South Bay Lutheran with 16 points. Wes Parrish scored a game-high 20 points for Highland Hall, and Kory Kipp added 17 points and 15 rebounds.
Holy Martyrs 83, Oak Hill 60--Holy Martyrs was led by Viken Tchorbadjian with 19 points. Junior forward Armen Apramian added 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Ara Markarian scored 13 points. David Friedman scored 28 points for Oak Hill.
Cal Prep 74, First Lutheran 45--Forward Darryl Parrish scored 29 points and had 14 rebounds for Cal Prep in the Liberty League game. Guard Glen Karoll had 16 points and forward Pat Colette had 15 points and 16 rebounds for Cal Prep.
Campbell Hall 47, Providence 38--Donnie Sakaida scored a game-high 18 points to lead Campbell Hall to the Delphic League victory. Tim Sutton added 13 points and ten rebounds for Campbell Hall (6-3, 4-3 in league).
Montclair Prep 58, Marshall Fundamental 48--Craig Handschu and Dave Sanger each scored 14 points for Montclair Prep (5-6, 2-0 in league) in the Alpha League game.
Simi Lutheran 50, Coast Christian 45--Simi Lutheran’s Ara Deukmedjian, who had 24 points, made two free throws at the start of the fourth quarter to give Simi Lutheran (4-6, 1-1) its first lead and carry it to the Heritage League victory.
Viewpoint 57, Pilgrim 55--Forward Ali Banki, who led Viewpoint with 17 points, made two free throws with 35 seconds left in overtime in the Heritage League game.
Oakwood 51, Windward 30--Mitchell Butler of Oakwood scored a game-high 17 points in the Liberty League gam.
West Valley Christian 62, Camarillo Christian 48--Center John Stalboerger had game-high totals of 28 points and 21 rebounds for West Valley Christian (5-3, 1-0 in league).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Newbury Park 62, Royal 39--Newbury Park’s Julia Johnson led all players with 21 points for Newbury Park (7-6, 2-1 in Marmonte League). Marlo Cormier added 16 points for Newbury Park.
Newbury Park out-rebounded Royal, 44-17, and held all Royal scorers to under 10 points. Royal shot 21%.
Simi Valley 90, Westlake 46--Julie Arlotto had 25 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals to lead Simi Valley (12-3, 3-0 in Marmonte League).
Reseda 56, Birmingham 29--Dana Jones of Reseda had game-high totals of 17 points and 7 assists in the West Valley League opener. Cheryl Hightower and Aggie Garcia of Reseda added 10 points each.
North Hollywood 40, Canoga Park 34--Ysraelya Horner scored 11 points and Debbie Herz collected 13 rebounds in the Pac-6 League opener. Canoga Park was led by Julie Burmester with 16 points and Roz Linton with 12.
Sylmar 47, Poly 24--Keri Rincon powered Sylmar’s Pac-6 victory with 24 points and Dina Vanden Broeder added 13. Poly’s Jocelyn Allison scored 8 points.
Cleveland 54, Granada Hills 40--Nancy Nicholls led Cleveland (2-3, 1-0 in Valley League) with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Dawn Greer had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Jaye Alba scored 10 points for Granada Hills.
Notre Dame 41, Marymount 20--Senior forward Kristen Borella scored 18 points and had 16 rebounds, both game-highs, for Notre Dame (6-2).
Taft 41, Grant 36--Forward Cana Snyder scored eight of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter to lead Taft to the West Valley league victory. Guard Marissa Benetua scored 12 points for Grant (1-3, 0-1 in league) and forward Bridget Davis had 13 rebounds for Taft (5-0, 1-0 in league).
Burbank 51, Alhambra 28--Burbank’s Christy Calderon led all scorers with 23 for Burbank (8-4, 1-0 in Foothill League) limited Alhambra to only three third-quarter points. Christine Rumfola scored 17 points and had 11 rebounds for Burbank.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Cal Lutheran 80, Redlands 74--Gloria Phillips made 9 of 12 shots and was perfect on four free throw attempts for 22 points and had 16 rebounds to lead Cal Lutheran (3-8) in a nonconference game.
BOYS SOCCER
L.A. Baptist 6, L.A. Lutheran 0--Sophomore forward Keith Johnson scored a pair of second-half goals and junior goalie Mike Eden stopped all four L.A. Lutheran shots in his first varsity game.
Chaminade 5, Salesian 0--Jonas Escalera and Trevor Slavic scored two goals each in the Santa Fe League game for Chaminade (4-5, 1-1).
Alemany 1, Crespi 0--Paul Greenhalgh scored the only goal at the 30-minute mark to even Alemany’s Del Rey League record at 1-1 and its overall record at 4-5.
GIRLS SOCCER
Alemany 5, Alverno 0--Reserve goalkeeper Kate Dear stopped seven shots to give Alemany (11-4-3, 2-0 in league) a Pacific League shutout victory at Alverno. Robyn Renaud scored two first-half goals as Alemany took a 3-0 halftime lead. Alemany added goals by Kerri Cook, Theresa Corelli and Vicky Wagenbach.
