Josh Thompson of Gunnison, Colo., rebounding from five minutes in penalties for shooting misses, posted the fastest ski time of the competition to win the U.S. Biathlon Assn.’s men’s 20-kilometer world championship trial at Lake Placid, N.Y.
Thompson, who also won the men’s 10-kilometer race on Saturday, had a 1:08.37 effort for the 20-kilometer cross-country ski event. The five misses gave him a total time of 1:13.37, good enough to edge Glen Eberle of McCall, Idaho.
Eberle had only two misses after 20 shots during four shooting stops, but his ski time of 1:12.09 gave him a total of 1:14.09.
The U.S. men’s team will be named after a final race on Tuesday. The team will compete at the World Biathlon Championships at Lake Placid Feb. 10-15.
