Few Americans believe that 1987 will be a peaceful year, free of international discord, and their gloomy prediction is shared by many people around the world. This finding is based on surveys in 32 nations and Hong Kong by Gallup International Research Institutes. In the United States, only one person in 11 (9%) thinks 1987 will be peaceful. A much greater proportion (35%) see a troubled year ahead, while 48% expect little change from 1986. Most pessimistic are the people of India, of whom 56% expect a year of discord, followed by white South Africans (47%) and the people of Colombia, Luxembourg, Uruguay and black South Africans, each with 46%.
