The Atlanta Falcons, whose offer to Dick Vermeil was rejected Saturday, have turned to Plan B to choose a head coach to replace Dan Henning, who was fired last week.
“Plan B is a few individuals we’ve got on our minds,†said Taylor Smith, the team’s executive vice president. “We haven’t talked directly to anybody, but we’ve sent some feelers out.â€
Vermeil, a former coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, was offered the job Tuesday, one day after Henning was fired after four seasons and a 22-41-1 record, including 7-8-1 in 1986.
“I was so tempted to say yes Tuesday,†Vermeil said in an interview after rejecting the Falcons’ offer. “I almost got on a plane. If I had physically met with them Tuesday, I would have taken it right then.â€
Vermeil, 50, retired at the end of the 1982 season. Since then, he has worked as a commentator for CBS. He said he will continue that career.
