Alexia J. Morrison, the independent counsel investigating the Justice Department’s former chief legal adviser, has asked Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III for authority to investigate two other former top department officials, the Washington Post reported, quoting sources familiar with the case. But Meese has rejected the counsel’s request that the inquiry be broadened to include Edward C. Schmults and Carol E. Dinkins, both former deputy attorneys general, the paper’s sources said. The inquiry centers on former Assistant Atty. Gen. Theodore B. Olson, who is alleged to have given Congress false testimony regarding access to Environmental Protection Agency documents.
