South Africa’s biggest-selling black newspaper, the Sowetan, withdrew a court challenge to government censorship of dissident protests. Under emergency regulations imposed nationwide Dec. 11, police last week barred the Sowetan and two other anti-government newspapers from publicizing news or advertisements on an opposition campaign dubbed “Christmas Against the Emergency.” In announcing the withdrawal of the challenge, lawyers for the Johannesburg daily cited tighter publishing restrictions ordered against the newspaper over the weekend.
