A U.S. Marine who fled the Vietnam War in 1970 and began a new life in Australia was arrested when he applied for a passport to visit his ailing father in the United States. Douglas Beane, 39, a private, disappeared while on leave from Vietnam and assumed a false name, a spokesman for the U.S. Information Agency said in Sydney. Beane’s wife, Karen, said he thought he was safe from arrest after being granted permanent resident status in Australia. Beane was being held by the Australian navy in Sydney pending a decision on his case. He could face a U.S. military court-martial.
