The California Highway Patrol ordered 26 buses taken out of service for safety violations over the weekend after checks conducted by the patrol on Interstate 5 at the San Onofre checkpoint north of Oceanside.
The patrol inspected 91 buses on Saturday and 79 on Sunday. CHP officer Jim Logan said 172 citations were issued for chartered buses, two for Greyhound buses and one for a Trailways bus.
Violations discovered during the check from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday included overtime driving, expired driver’s licenses and medical certificates, faulty brakes and defective steering.
