USC’s basketball team will play its final pre-conference game today, a 3 p.m. meeting with Western Washington at the Sports Arena.

The Trojans will open the Pacific 10 season next Saturday against Washington State at Pullman, Wash., followed by a game Dec. 23 against Washington at Seattle.

USC has a 3-3 record. Western Washington, an NAIA team, is 5-2.

“We need as many wins as we can get and we need some quality practice time next week,†USC Coach George Raveling said. “If we can get in a good week of practice, we’ll be ready for Washington State and Washington. But we won’t be ready for UCLA, Arizona, or Cal. We may never be ready for them.â€

The Trojans shot 49.1%, a season high, in beating Niagara, 69-62, Thursday night at the Sports Arena. According to Raveling, poor shooting has been the team’s most persistent problem.

Western Washington is coached by Brad Jackson, who was a point guard and later a graduate assistant for Raveling when he coached at Washington State in the mid-1970s.
