A 56-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by two cars as he walked beside the Garden Grove Freeway in Orange, the California Highway Patrol reported Friday.

The victim, Marion Butler of Santa Ana, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Orange County coroner’s office said.

According to the CHP, the accident occurred at 10 p.m. Thursday on the westbound Garden Grove Freeway, just east of the City Drive. Butler apparently was walking off the shoulder of the freeway when he was first hit by a car driven by Rick Kaplan, 27, of Huntington Beach.

A car immediately behind Kaplan’s then struck Butler and dragged him 500 feet, the CHP said. The second car was driven by Staci Huntington, 25, of Newport Beach.

Both cars were being driven within the speed limit, and no citations were filed, the CHP said.
